Bits & Bobs We ♥: Gems and Rhinestones

by Andrea on May 23, 2011

What girl doesn’t like gems and rhinestones?  Personally, I especially love them when they are coming out of Eddie Vedder’s mouth.  Quoi? Let me explain.  On Pearl Jam’s last album, Backspacer, they featured a song that I just adore.  It’s called Unthought Known and is absolutely brilliant and lovely.

My favorite line of all is ‘feel the sky blanket you, with gems and rhinestones.’  When you hear the song, cue video below, you’ll see that it starts out slow and steady.  It gradually builds to the part where Eddie almost growls ‘with gems and rhinestones’ at 1:20. At concerts, Eddie isn’t alone in the growling. The whole crowd yells ‘with gems and rhinestones’, which gives me goosebumps every time.

Another lyric worth featuring is ‘see the path cut by the moon, for you to walk on, see the waves on distant shores, awaiting your arrival.’ I’ve heard some people say this song could be a parent encouraging their child to explore the world and make the most of their life. I love that interpretation as I think about Mo exploring distant shores under a sky of sparkly gems.

PS – Wish me luck. Later today I will be trying to buy tickets to Pearl Jam’s 20th anniversary festival taking place Labor Day Weekend.  Brian and I hope to take the trip to Wisconsin and celebrate our own 10 year anniversary at the festival.  PJ tickets are notorious for selling out in a matter of minutes so I’ll take all the luck I can get.  Fingers crossed!
