Green Gem: Vinho Verde

by Andrea on May 11, 2011

As the weather warms up, run (don’t walk) to pick up a bottle of vinho verde.  This refreshing glass (or three) of wine might just be one of your new favorite summer pleasures. Casal Garcia, pictured below, rates highly amongst my favorites.

A refreshing wine from northern Portugal, vinho verde translates as green wine.  The green refers to its young grapes and not the color.  I don’t know about other parts of the States, but in the last five years I have seen more and more different brands of vinho verde being carried in our neighborhood grocery stores.  Even our Trader Joe’s is currently carrying three different vinho verdes at this time.

What makes this light and refreshing wine (served very chilled, as my dad always says) so delicious is that it is slightly carbonated.  Thanks to wikipedia, I just learned that it doesn’t have enough carbonation to be officially considered a sparkling wine.  I like to think of it as having a hint of effervescence.  Over the years, I have introduced it to many friends, and now I am happy to share it with you!  Enjoy!
