Bits & Bobs We ♥: Reading is Sexy

by Andrea on June 6, 2011

Do you think reading is sexy?  I do and only wish I could do more and more of it.  To help stay organized on what I have read and want to read, I turn to Goodreads.

Goodreads is like the Facebook for books.  You create an account, add friends, track & rate books, and lose yourself in this wonderful world of literature.  In your account, you add books and mark them as read, currently reading, or to read.  You can then sort them into ‘bookshelves’, either using standard bookshelves or coming up with your own. My favorite bookshelf is ‘guilty pleasure’ where I track my guiltiest of pleasures. (I pinky swear that I read good stuff too, but for me, nothing says vacation more than cracking into a new MSW and hanging with Jessica for a little while.)

You can spend a lot of time on this site.  I currently do not have that luxury, so I primarily use this site for two functions: (1) tracking books that I have read and want to read, (2) finding new books to read.

What I love about this site is that I receive a weekly email letting me know what my friends have added to their own bookshelves along with their rating of 1 to 5 stars.  When I am looking for a new book to read, I typically start with these emails for suggestions.  I then go to the site and use their explore tab to find news books.    There are various ways to explore the site.  One way is to search by ‘popular’ and see books sorted by ‘most read this week’ or ‘new releases this year’ for example.  Or, you search by ‘browse’ and see what Goodreads readers have voted to a variety of lists such as ‘Best Books of the Decade: 2000s,’ ‘Best Historical Fiction,’ or ‘Best Children’s Books.’  When you click on a specific book, you see the average rating and by how many readers.

The site offers a lot more for those that are interested.  You can join groups, contribute to discussion forums, and write book reviews.  For me, it’s a great organizational tool, but it truly is a social community for readers.
