The night before we attended our first blog conference, I happened to be playing around on my phone (fancy phone like Andrea calls it!) and downloaded a photo app that looked like fun. The very next day, one of the speakers Lisa Leonard commented on how she uses this photo form of social media in her business and I vowed to give it a try. I wasn’t exactly sure what was going to make this app different than just using the camera feature but I STAND CORRECTED! WOW…what fun! Instagram is a wee bit addicting actually!
Instagram is “a fun & quirky way to share your life with friends through a series of pictures. Snap a photo, then choose a filter to transform the look and feel of the shot into a memory to keep around forever.”
When I opened the app, I happened to be “playing” in Pip’s playhouse in the yard but she was busy eating her snack. So I thought I’d snap a photo to see what this program does. The two things that make it unique from just using your camera is the tilt-shift function, which lets you select a piece of your photo that you’d like in-focus, then select the area surrounding that you’d like to blur out and the filter function that lets you choose from 16 different settings to bring your photo from black and white to 1977. Here’s my first test…
Next I tried to get my subject to actually look at the camera and I got a real cheesy smile!
Then I resorted to taking a photo of myself…sad but true! I tried out the long parallel tilt-shift option this time to follow the length of my shoe.
Then later I wanted to see about a summer fire shot. I used the circle tilt-shift function this time, centered around the open chiminea.
And just one last summer fire shot to see how to get “extra” stuff in the photo without taking away from the flame.
Each filter and tilt-shift was different and I think they all turned out pretty unique. I cannot stress how much fun this was! Thank you for putting up with my very non-technical photography terms and photos! I really think that this will be a fun way to document items that we see and do on our blog! I will give a warning out that some of my photo craze may fall into our Twitter feed! Give it a whirl, besides it’s free, you’ve got nothing to lose!
Happy longest day of the year….now summer come on over to Seattle!
