Bits & Bobs We ♥: Commas

by Andrea on September 26, 2011

I am a commaphile.  I like it when they are used correctly and feel robbed when a comma is missing.

The comma that I love the most is the Oxford comma.  Do you know what the Oxford comma is?  It’s okay, I didn’t know that term until this year.  I always described it as ‘A comma B comma and C’ as opposed to ‘ A comma B and C.’  It’s the second comma, aka the serial comma.  Much to my chagrin, it is now okay to forgo the second comma.  The grammar gods apparently have given us permission to take it our leave it.

I want to take a moment to share why you should always strive to use commas correctly.  Here are a few humorous examples:

“I’d like to thank my parents, Jesus and Oprah Winfrey.” (Besides suggesting that a child was born to Jesus and Oprah, the lack of a serial comma also implies that Jesus’ last name is Winfrey.) (Ooligan Press)

Our next example turns a happy occasion into a scary one:

Eating your grandpa is not a good idea.  And finally:

I think we can safely assume that Rachel Ray does not have cannibalistic tendencies.

As evidenced above in all three examples, commas come in handy. Let’s vow to use commas correctly, to not eat humans, and to not talk about Oprah making babies with Jesus.

Happy comma-ing!
