Bits & Bobs We ♥: Autumn Colors

by Emily on October 17, 2011

I have just returned from a wonderful conference in Wenatchee, WA which is east of the mountains in Washington state.   Washingtonians tend to divide the state into 2 parts – west side of the mountains and east side of the mountains.   The drive is absolutely the most beautiful right now!  Highway-2 is a mostly two-lane, winding road that wanders up into the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, (the tops of which had some light dusting of snow) and then you reach the summit of Stevens Pass (a local ski resort), then you bomb down the eastside of the pass into beautiful Chelan County and follow the Wenatchee River as it rapids rush through the riverbeds.

I felt like I had new eyes with this trip.  It could have been the fact that I was alone, had relatively relaxing music on and was tuned into my rental car, but I have never seen the autumn colors like I did this weekend.  I was on a very tight schedule going to my conference but I wished that I could have pulled over at each quiet section of the road just to look at the beautiful landscape before me.  The last time I made this trip over Hwy-2 in October was years ago and it was much earlier in the month so the colors weren’t quite as vivid as this past weekend.

The most amazing part of the drive was how much the color intensified in just 3 days that I was there.  On my trip home, the muted, pale orange color of leaves had turned to a fiery red that rushed the hillsides of the mountains.  I would highly recommend that you experience this beautiful drive along Highway-2 soon.  It can easily be done in a day trip, although you might find a lot more fun in staying overnight in Leavenworth, Wenatchee or venturing up to Lake Chelan.  This part of Washington is just spectacular and even though I’m quite fond of my west side, city living, I think I could easily live in any of these areas.

If you’re looking for a nice drive or to play hookey a day this week, I’d recommend spending your time experiencing the autumn colors of Washington!
