Bits & Bobs We ♥: Ferries

by Andrea on October 10, 2011

For those you who do not live in the Puget Sound or the Greater Seattle area, you simply must take a ferry during your next visit to our neck of the woods.  It’s a relatively inexpensive way to get out on the water, and the destination is always to either the Olympic Peninsula or one of our lovely islands scattered throughout the Sound.

Made famous by Derek Shepherd on Grey’s Anatomy, the Washington State ferries are an unglamorous way to explore our area.  The seating and paint harken back to another era; the food is nothing to write home about; and the bathrooms are utilitarian at best.  But that’s the point, they are a publicly operated transport, just like busses and subways in your hometown.  There are many folks that ride ferries daily as part of their work commute. And then there are people like me, that use them for daytrips and weekend adventures.

I’m not sure why I love them so much, but inevitably once we are on the other side on whichever island or island-like destination we are exploring, we discover a great beach, bakery, bookstore, coffee shop, or park.  Just yesterday, Brian wanted to go fishing and wanted the whole fandamily to come along.  I must admit, it was really drizzly and gray, and I wasn’t feeling it.  But then I said, ‘will it involve a ferry ride?’  Sure enough it did.  Sold!

Not only was the ferry ride fun, but today we stumbled upon a german style ale house, an antiques mall, and an awesome beach.  To reward us, the drizzle disappeared, and by the time we hit the beach, the sun was out and gorgeous!

To learn more about all of their destinations, including British Columbia, Canada, visit Washington State Ferries. Happy sailing!
