Bits & Bobs We ♥: Iced Coffee Pioneer Style

by Emily on March 26, 2012

Remember last year when I thought I had the greatest invention yet…the iced cube coffee treat?  Well, I take that back.  Pioneer Woman has the best coffee treat yet!  Late last year, I was trolling around blogland reading about how some lovely ladies start their day off as full-time bloggers.  Many involved an ice-cold coffee.  I’m usually a-one-a-day-hot coffee gal but the amount of raving going on with these coffee drinks, and I had to give it a try.  And I do love an iced coffee.

I have now fallen in love with the cold brew method.  Absolute genius with flavor, bold, strong taste that is not too overwhelming.  It is simple to make given you’ve got about 10 minutes time to strain the grounds, but you’ll be forever happy that you spent this time.

After seeing a few different methods and water/coffee ratios, I have fixed on this one and it is perfect for me.  Start with one pound of coffee and empty into a large pitcher or bowl.  Then add about 1-2 gallons of water and stir.  I prefer the stronger 1 gallon method.  Then, put the pitcher to sleep on your counter for at least 8 hours.

Looks pretty lovely doesn’t it?

Morning time!  Let’s brew…I carefully rest my mesh coffee filter over a large pitcher with a spout which makes my morning routine pretty easy.

This process does take a while as the coffee strains through the filter.  You’ll need to empty the grounds occasionally to allow movement.

Well, there you have it!  Delicious cold-brew coffee.  I put this pitcher inside my fridge and just fill my to-go glass with ice and fill with coffee and some milk.

Thank you Pioneer Woman for sharing this method and what a treat to take into work without stopping at a coffee shop along the way.  That’s always a hassle with a toddler in tow!
