Bits & Bobs We ♥: Stand Up Paddleboarding

by Andrea on April 30, 2012

Have you ever tried stand up paddleboard, aka SUP?  It’s pretty rad.

I tried it for the first time last Summer and loved it.  For those of you unfamiliar with SUP, it’s standing up on surfboard-like board and then using an oar to paddle yourself around.  Like so.

Brian had tried it before I had and I’d seen the suppers out on the Puget Sound, but it just looked difficult.  And for those of you not in the know, I am not the most coordinated person around.  In fact, I have a hard time with balance and thought this activity was out of the picture for me.

But, it just looked so darn intriguing.  AND THEN, I learned that the SUP place down the hill from us also did SUP yoga. Like so.

Ack.  All of a sudden SUP yoga looked impossible and regular old SUP looked feasible.  Last Summer, I recruited my good friend Dana, and we went out on a SUP date on the Puget Sound.  I loved it!  AND, it’s actually easy.  It certainly was easier than it looks, even for me, a girl with balance issues.  We signed up for a class through Surf Ballard, and after our five minute lesson, we just followed the group around.  Turns out that if the water is calm, as it was for us, SUP is quite leisurely and relaxing. Dana and I just hung out at the back of the group and chatted for a few hours.  We carried on a lovely little conversation whilst gliding around on the water.  It’s totally lovely!

I highly recommend this activity and am looking forward to getting back out there…. once the weather warms up a bit.  It is Seattle after all.  No worries though Seattlelites, Surf Ballard will even rent you a wetsuit.

*As luck would have it, there is a Groupon going on right now for the Surf Ballard SUP class and two hour tour*

So my advice? Figure out where the nearest SUP place is to your home and figure out how to spend plenty of quality time out on the water this Summer!
