Orchids, So Beautiful… and So Intimidating

by Andrea on May 22, 2012

While green is my most favorite of colors, there is nothing green about my thumb or anything closely related to my thumb.  You may have noticed that our lovely gardening posts all come from Emily, and there is a very good reason for that.  Every plant I touch… or sometimes even just look at, dies.  (Honestly, it’s probably that I’m not touching or looking at it until it’s too late.)

As fate would have it, I have inherited sixteen (16!) orchids.  Oy vay, indeed. These little ladies are in different stages.  Some are in full bloom while others just have leaves.  I have a lot, a lot, to work with.

What is a girl like me going to do with 16 orchids?  Well, goal number one is to keep them alive.  However, I feel that is easier said than done.  Past attempts at caring for orchids have proven disastrous.  Am I the only one who finds them intimidating?

Upon a little web research, I stumbled across the American Orchid Society whose mission ‘is to promote and support the passion for orchids through education, conservation, and research.’ While they are a membership organization, they have plenty of free information for newbies like me!  Check out the monthly checklist.  Also, be sure to visit their Orchid Basics where you can sign up to receive their beginner’s newsletter.  (I signed up for this about five minutes ago.)

From time to time, I’ll post some updates on my orchids (i.e., the number that are still alive) and any new tricks or tips that I learn along the way.  Hope you enjoy my adventures in orchid raising!

The photos sprinkled throughout the post are some of my new lovelies!
